Pecha Watcha?

Here is my pecha kucha presentation.
I again chose softball as the topic, but not about umpiring but about the history of the game.

I hope you enjoy it. Here is the link to my post on Google, without the voice over.

Googling Dox err Docs

I created a google site for my T4T class.
My site is pretty simple, I plan on deleting my site before I start teaching. But for now I have one. I am ambivalent about creating a site, it isn't something that I will keep up with. I am just not that enamored with technology. I created a survey on Technology.
So far, everyone seems to think that the phone is the one most important thing, a camera is essential on a deserted island, and technology has helped rather than hurt society.

Screenr- I want my You Tube Video

I wanted to be able to keep the occasional You Tube video. I found a tool to help me do that.

Second LIfe

I cannot say that I see the value in this post for me. It holds nothing that I find compelling. I guess I am just too much of a realist. Virtual life doesn't make me want to be anything but out of doors. I cannot umpire a softball game if I am in second life and I cannot make a living playing second life. I understand that this program is being used instead of actually going to classrooms, but I don't have the inclination nor the desire to have anything to do with a virtual life.

I watched this video again, and can I say I would like my 18 minutes back.
1. What is your most significant "takeaway" or learning point from the video? Why? Elaborate in detail. That there are other ways to skin a cat so to speak.
“If a child cannot learn in the way we teach, we must teach in a way the
child can learn.”
Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas Of course I didn't learn that from the video, I learned that from one of my professors.

2. How does this video / the ideas of this video relate or connect with your own experiences from your life. Elaborate.I guess give a dog a piece of bacon and he will do what you want? I understand the whole concept of rewarding good behavior. In special ed however, the rewards are supposed to be intrinsic, not extrinsic. We have objective goals, not subjective.

3. What are some of the implications of this video / the ideas of this video for your own teaching practice and pedagogic creed as a educator? Again, I find no value in Second Life. I understand that while there are some instances where having a virtual classroom could be useful, I know the program is there, but I don't plan on using it. This is kind of like setting the table with 4 forks, 3 spoons, 2 knives, 3 plates and 2 bowls to eat pizza. Yeah, the tools are there, it doesn't mean I have to use them.

I have to say that one of my favorite parts about this particular video was when the student at NIU looked into the camera and said he knew what his parents felt like when they were having to rely on him for tech information. I find it ironic that even now, the youth are getting even younger at technological proficiency. I worry though that speaking and verbal communication could become a casualty of technology. Even now, kids in the same room, will speak by texting rather than talking, even when no one else is in the same room. I don't necessarily think that is a good thing. While there are certainly positives in being very tech literate, I don't think we should let our verbal skills fall to the wayside.
1. What is your most significant "takeaway" or learning point from the video? Why? Elaborate in detail. This young person is spending way too much time playing war of war craft and not enough time doing physical activities.
2. How does this video / the ideas of this video relate or connect with your own experiences from your life. Elaborate. Considering that one of my jobs as a special education major is to teach kids effective communication. I don't believe that texting is creating young people who have the skills needed to be problem solvers. Already students are using text speak in their papers rather than proper English. I have personally seen papers that students have turned in thinking that they have done a good job and they get upset because they are told that it isn't proper to use text shorthand. Technology has a wonderful place in society, but we have to be mindful that technology can create more opportunities to connect to people, but it cannot teach people the personal touch of communication.
3. What are some of the implications of this video / the ideas of this video for your own teaching practice and pedagogic creed as a educator? Allowing students to explore new technology is a good thing. I plan to utilize as much technology as possible. We use a lot of assistive technology in special ed.

I think this video presentation hits the nail on the head. She has put into words the best teaching procedures. Sharing with others our passion can be a teaching tool. We have to be careful though not to think that what we are passionate about others will be passionate about as well. I know that this class is often like pulling teeth for me. Just like the post be
1. What is your most significant "takeaway" or learning point from the video? Why? Elaborate in detail. Having students find and then teach about something they are passionate about is a very effective way to teach.

This is a clear example of a best practice teaching method. Progressive ideology includes activity based student centered curricula. This video discusses just that. Curricula that I have already developed implements project based education throughout.

Blogging From Afar

I found a school in the UK.

My second comment on the same blog.

Nafiza

Nafiza

All I can say is that it would be amazing if this technology was available for all students, rather than just the certain ones or charter schools. Nafiza is a pretty cool young lady who works to make sure she is helping others and she is staying up on the newest technology. I would really hope that she will be one of the future leaders who will lead this nation into complete technology leadership. It is our young people who will lead the way, perhaps she will figure out a way to make the ipod battery stay charged longer.

BLOGGING BUDDIES

Blogging Buddies Video

This video explains how a pre-service teachers class learned and assisted 1st graders. The video discusses the effects of blogging on the spelling and punctuation abilities of the 1st graders and how those abilities grew over the course of the semester. It is interesting to note that the college students felt that they got just as much from the 1st graders and the 1st graders did from the college students. I liked that the students were allowed to meet face to face. I think that will embed a thought that if you can't meet that person, then you probably shouldn't be talking to them.

Project Learning

ProjectLearning

This video really exemplifies the reasoning behind keeping students up and active. Not one classroom was about being still, being quiet and reading books. The students are learning a new vocabulary that includes science and math concepts rather than what kind of gun or drugs they want. Forget the lecture and bring on the global warming, curing cancer, feeding the starving people of the world. This is what education should be, this is what education has to become.

Wizard of Apps?

Wizard of Apps.

My first impression was; boy, was this a long video. I appreciate the desire to make this information entertaining but quite frankly, the material Dr. Valenza was wanting people to see was so blurry, I couldn't see it. I can understand the need to understand the tools available but I think it would have been more effective had I been able to see what she was actually trying to show. I am sure that it was more visible on a big screen, but I just couldn't see what she was doing. I also do own an iphone or a mac computer, so some of it I found a bit bewildering.
Overall this is a worthwhile effort that might be best viewed in short segments rather than as a continual piece.
This piece discusses using different websites to track a digital footprint, one of the sites is 12people, another site discussed is pipl, also discussed was using mind map on Wikipedia. All of these tools can be helpful considering that children are often in many different places on the web without realizing they are leaving footprints. This particular video would, I believe, be more effective if it were broken up into segments that can be viewed separately to allow students the opportunity to master each tool before moving on. Introducing this many tools at once can be quite off putting for students. Allowing students to master then move on rather than overwhelming is a recognized best practice in curriculum. While there are incidences that students are prepared for the introduction of many new tools, there are also students who would prefer to take it slower. Each student has their preference and it is up to the educator to develop a plan for each student to use their preferred learning style. As educators it is up to us to teach how the student learns, not for the student to learn how the instructor teaches.

Kiwi's on the Loose

Rachel Boyd's classroom is very busy. I went to their website and wanted to read to read their blogs but the classroom seems to have come to a halt. I was unable to find anything posted since December. I suppose they could be taking a break. I would like to incorporate the use of the smartboard the way she has. I will be teaching secondary special education and I hope to be able to spark interest in my students to the level that Rachel has.

Nafiza

Nafiza is an intelligent young woman who has embraced technology. She has gone from being a student to helping to teach others on how to utilize tools in classrooms and in life.

Nafiza is demonstrating to others how to use tools and I hope that I can use some of these tools in my future classroom.

Cameron: Hockey Geek

Cameron is an eleven year old hockey playing technology wielding wizard. He has turned his love of film making into a tool he uses for his own uses as well as using his talent to assist his classmates.
Cameron's video
is a reflection on where our future is headed. His grasp of film making and how to use technology and special effects is amazing. He has taken his love of film making and used it to enhance his hockey play and his studies. One of the things that I found most profound is the wide gulf between
students in private schools and wealthy families and students in inner schools. Inner city schools are not equipped to produce or disseminate the material Cameron makes available to his class. The inequalities between Cameron's school and urban schools is blaring.
As a special education major, technology is a major part of the curriculum. I have to find ways to engage children with learning difficulties in the best possible way. I don't imagine that many of my students will be bringing video into the classroom, but perhaps as a class we can find ways to incorporate video into our lessons.
